Introduction

There's a moment in every brand project when someone asks, "So, what are the options?" And a design studio lays out three or four directions, and everyone picks the one they like best.

Made Thought doesn't work that way. It presents one recommended answer. That tells you a lot about this London studio: it believes the thinking matters more than the menu.

If you've seen Pinterest's refreshed identity, G.F Smith's paper campaigns or the ever-changing Design Miami logo, you've seen Made Thought's work. Its founders started in a bedroom in 2000. Today it's part of WPP's AKQA, with studios in London and New York.

If you're thinking about hiring Made Thought, you probably want a brand that feels considered, crafted and a little bit special. In this review, I'll walk you through who Made Thought is, how it works, what it has made, what it likely costs, and whether it's the right fit for you.

The Short Answer: Is Made Thought Worth It?

Made Thought is worth it for premium, design-led brands (fashion, luxury, culture, design and tech) that want deep thinking and beautiful craft, but it's a premium studio, and its "one answer" approach suits clients who want a confident partner.

How I Wrote This Review

I put this review together in early November 2026. I looked at an in-depth studio profile from Creative Lives in Progress, Design Week's coverage of the WPP deal, and Made Thought's best-known public projects.

I haven't hired Made Thought myself. I'm a designer who works on branding, and Made Thought is a studio many of us admire, so this is a respectful but honest look.

Who Is Made Thought?

Made Thought is a London design studio founded in 2000 by Paul Austin and Ben Parker. They met while studying at Ravensbourne and started the studio in Ben's bedroom.

Today, its London studio is in Fitzrovia, just north of Oxford Street. It deliberately avoided the Shoreditch design scene. It opened a New York studio in January 2021.

Part of WPP and The New Standard

In December 2021, WPP bought a majority stake in Made Thought. The studio became part of AKQA, WPP's creative agency, and joined a new collective called The New Standard, alongside:

  • Universal Design Studio, an interior and spatial design studio,

  • Map Project Office, an industrial and product design studio.

The studios kept their names and creative independence, and the companies said the deal came with no restructuring or layoffs.

A "creative office," not just a design studio

Made Thought describes itself as a creative office rather than only a graphic design studio. Its core belief is that good design should drive behavior, not just look nice.

How it works

Its process has four phases:

  1. Define: understand the problem and the purpose.

  2. Imagine: explore ideas.

  3. Refine: develop the strongest idea.

  4. Deliver: bring it to life.

And as mentioned, it presents one recommended answer rather than a range of options. That takes confidence, and it means the studio has to be sure it understands your brand.

Made Thought's Clients and Notable Projects

Made Thought's best-known work includes:

  • Pinterest: a redesign of the visual identity.

  • G.F Smith: campaigns including the "world's favourite colour" project and Extract, a paper made from recycled coffee cups.

  • Design Miami: its longest-running project, where the logo is redesigned every season.

  • Stella McCartney, Established & Sons and Sunspel: fashion and design brands.

  • Prior: a travel brand whose rebrand famously banned photography.

  • A Plastic Planet: including the Plastic Free mark.

  • BrewDog: a rebrand.

Made Thought has even launched its own leather accessories brand, M,A,P., which says a lot about how much it cares about making things.

What these projects show

There's a theme: brands with taste and a point of view. Fashion, design, paper, travel and culture. Pinterest and BrewDog show it can also work for big, mainstream companies.

What Do Clients Say About Made Thought?

Made Thought doesn't have a Clutch profile or a big set of public reviews. Its reputation comes from long-term clients, design press and awards.

What strengths come through

  • Long relationships. Design Miami has been a client for years.

  • Ideas first. It starts with purpose before visuals.

  • Craft. Beautiful, considered work across print, packaging and digital.

  • Behavior-focused design. The Plastic Free mark is a good example.

What's missing

There's little public detail about budgets, timelines and the day-to-day experience. Since the WPP deal, it's also worth asking how decisions are made and who leads your work.

Is Made Thought Legit?

Yes. Made Thought has been working since 2000, has studios in London and New York, works with brands like Pinterest and Stella McCartney, and is part of WPP's AKQA.

How Much Does Made Thought Cost?

Made Thought doesn't publish prices. Here's my honest estimate, based on how premium London branding studios usually price. These are my own ranges:

Project type

What it usually involves

Rough budget (my estimate)

Brand identity (smaller brand)

Strategy, identity, guidelines

Mid to high five figures

Full rebrand

Strategy, identity, art direction, rollout

Six figures

Brand experience with New Standard partners

Brand, interiors and product

Large six figures and up

Why "one answer" can save money

Presenting one direction can sound risky, but it can also mean less wasted work. Instead of paying for three half-developed routes, you pay for one fully thought-through idea. The key is to make sure the "Define" phase is really thorough, because everything depends on it.

A worked example

Say you run a premium skincare brand in London. You've grown through word of mouth, but your packaging and website feel generic next to bigger brands.

Made Thought might:

  1. Define (3 to 4 weeks): what your brand stands for and why people love it.

  2. Imagine (3 to 4 weeks): explore the idea behind a new identity.

  3. Refine (4 to 6 weeks): develop the identity, packaging and photography direction.

  4. Deliver (6 to 8 weeks): finished packaging, guidelines and launch assets.

That's several months, likely in the high five figures to six figures. The result would be a brand that feels as good as your product.

Made Thought vs Other Branding Studios

Made Thought is often compared with Pentagram, Koto, DNCO, Mother Design, Collins and Order.

  • Pentagram is partner-led with huge range.

  • Koto and Collins work across tech and consumer brands.

  • DNCO focuses on places and cultural brands.

  • Mother Design and Order are smaller, design-led studios.

Made Thought stands out for fashion, luxury and design-world clients, its "one answer" process and its links to interior and product design through The New Standard.

My Honest Design Opinion

As a designer, I really respect Made Thought's confidence. Giving one recommendation instead of three options is something many designers would love to do but rarely dare. It works because the studio puts so much thinking into the early stages.

My honest caution: this approach needs the right client. If your team likes to compare lots of options, or you have many stakeholders who all want a say, the "one answer" model can feel uncomfortable. Talk about this early.

Also, since joining WPP, Made Thought has more resources, which is great for big projects. But ask how involved the founders will be in yours.

Pros of Made Thought

  • Ideas-first process.

  • Beautiful craft across print, packaging and digital.

  • Strong fashion, design and culture clients.

  • Access to interior and product design through The New Standard.

  • Studios in London and New York.

Cons of Made Thought

  • No public pricing.

  • No public client reviews.

  • "One answer" model doesn't suit every client.

  • Part of WPP. Not independent.

  • Premium budgets.

Who Should Hire Made Thought?

Made Thought is a good fit for:

  • fashion, luxury and design brands,

  • cultural organizations and events,

  • tech companies that want a crafted, human identity,

  • brands that want brand, space and product thinking together.

Who Should Look Elsewhere?

Look elsewhere if you:

  • want several design options to choose from,

  • have a small budget,

  • want an independent studio,

  • need a website or product built,

  • need ongoing, day-to-day design help.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  1. "How involved will Paul Austin or Ben Parker be?"

  2. "How does the 'one answer' approach work if we disagree?"

  3. "Which studio, London or New York, would lead our work?"

  4. "What's the budget range for a project like ours?"

  5. "Would Universal Design Studio or Map Project Office be involved?"

  6. "Can we speak to a past client?"

A Quick Note About Me

I'm Subarno, and I run a small design and no-code studio. Made Thought works at a level of craft and thinking that I admire, and for a fashion house or a global platform, it's the better choice by far.

But many smaller brands love that considered, crafted feel and just need the basics done well: a strong logo, a simple brand guide, and a website that looks the part. My $1,000/month retainer covers:

  • website design in Figma,

  • website builds in Framer or Webflow,

  • branding for smaller businesses, like logos, colors and brand guides,

  • small website animations and interactions,

  • banners, posters and social media content.

I've worked on 200+ projects, many of them white-label for agencies. If that sounds right for you, book a free 30-minute call or reach me on my contact page. If you want a confident creative partner with real depth, Made Thought is a great one to talk to.

Final Verdict: Is Made Thought Worth It?

Made Thought is one of London's most respected design studios. Its work for Pinterest, G.F Smith and Design Miami shows deep thinking and beautiful craft, and its "one answer" approach reflects real confidence.

It's worth it for premium, design-led brands with the budget for it. If you want lots of options, a small budget or ongoing everyday design help, another studio will suit you better.
